Setting
Up Your
Web Folder
Connection
(Windows XP)
Using Windows XP Professional, you can connect to the Mount's Student Web Server to create your personal website. This allows drag-and-drop copying of files to the Student Web Server, and can be set up on multiple computers, if desired, from either on-campus or off. From off-campus, you will need to be connected to the Internet before starting this process.
To create a connection on any computer,
follow the steps below.
- On your computer's desktop, double click the My Network Places
icon. (Or click Network Neighborhood, then click My Network Places. Or click My Computer, then click My Network Places.) A My Network Places window opens.
- Double click the Add Network Place
icon. The Add Network Places window opens.
- Click "Next".

|
- Click the Next > button.
An Connect to students.msj.edu log-in window opens.
- Enter your network credentials, as
illustrated:
User name: Your LastnameFirstname.
Password: ******* (same as MSJ email password)
*If you are the only one who uses the computer you may select the option to
"Save this password to your password list" to save steps
in the future.
*If you do not recall your password and the log-in fails, call ISS Help Desk at 244-4357 (HELP).
- Click the OK button. The
Add Network Place dialog box will open again.
- Type an "alias", a
user-friendly name, for the folder
you are connecting to. This name can be anything you want it to be. An
example is given in the illustration.

- Click the Next button. The following screen shows up.

- Click the Finish button. At
this point, you will be returned to My Network Places window, and the alias of your web folder will be listed.
- Double click to open the alias folder. You will see you real web folder (named your LastnameFirstname) on the MSJ student web server as shown below.
- Double click to open your web folder and view its contents. You must create a file named "index.htm" in order for your web page to work properly.
- You can now drag-and-drop files into
this folder, create new files and folders, etc., just as you manage
the files and folders on your local computer or network drive
space.
- If you see a message "This folder already contains a file named 'index.htm', would you like to replace the existing file with this file?", click Yes.
- You will need to do this every time you upload a new version of your web files to your MSJ student web folder.
- To view your website (homepage) "live" on the web, type in http://students.msj.edu/LastnameFirstname/
